Confidential

CRTC#: F691 Beta SP
English
Drama/Action

Starring: August Shellenberg, Chapelle Jaffe, Neil Munro and Tom Butler

Confidential is a stylish suspense thriller in the tradition of hard-boiled detective dramas. Set in 1949, it begins with a reporter who works at a daily tabloid. He has an idea for a story, an update on an infamous axe-murder that took place forty years before. He wants to find out what happened to the woman charged with the bloody crime. She was young and sweet looking, caught in a suspended backwards look in the beautifully recreated "newsreel" that the reporter watches obsessively. His search takes the reporter deeper and deeper into the past. When he disappears, his wife hires a detective, Charles Rlpley, who begins to trace the reporter's trail. Used to the tamer but meaner jobs involving blackmail and divorce, Ripley finds himself in a web of mystery, incest and murder in a small town. If the elements sound familiar, it is because Confidential is a knowingly crafted pastiche of genre elements from those classic tales when Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe were on the case. But this is no post-modern spoof. The period is simply but lovingly rendered, and the tale is unraveled with a leisurely and moody flare, which plays with nuances of emotion and expectation.
