Robin Crew has only one dream in life... to prove that she's a winner. It hasn't been easy for the 17 year old gymnast. Three years ago a car accident killed her father and left Robin with an injured leg that ended a promising gymnastics career. Her mother has remarried a loud, drunken lout who resents Robin and treats her badly. Robin helps set up equipment for the local gymnastics team and is forced to watch from the sidelines, dreaming of past days when she was a champion contender. But Robin is determined. Every night she sneeks away from her home and goes to a carpet warehouse where a kindly watchman allows her to practice her gymnastics moves. With the rubber underpadding serving as gym mats, Robin works feverishly to strengthen her leg and perfect her routines. Finally, Robin is strong enough to join the gymnastics team. Her determination to compete in a regional contest earns her the antipathy of her teammates. As Robin prepares for the competition, she faces seemingly impassible barriers. On the eve of the competition, Robin finds herself betrayed, alone, and left with only one last chance to make her life worth something. Left with only a will to succeed, Robin must face her most difficult challenge.

Zanny and Trick, two brothers aged ten and twenty two team up with an old drifter, Ivan and go in search of a better life in the country. Ivan has won a tattered deed to an old farm and "a hundred acres of blue." Along the way, they help each other through a series of hilarious adventures, building a mutual trust and discovering their individual strengths and weaknesses. If Ivan won the land in a card game, he stands a good chance of losing it in exactly the same way. Trick suffers from the age-old disease of youthful impatience. On several occasions, he is ready to leave the old man and boy to look for a more conventional dream. For a while at least, an auctioneer's daughter seems like a pretty good bet. But when he meets her family and her father starts after him with a gun, he's back in Ivan's bus in no time flat, and all three head for the hills. The road is long, with adventures aplenty. One morning they wake up and their bus has been stolen; another morning finds them surrounded by lions because they strayed into an animal park during the night. Finally, they arrive at the end of the trail, only to discover that for their dream to exist, they must roll up their sleeves and get to work.
